Mara River Crossing, Kenya

Mara Crossing (7206)

The crossing is awesome. Huge numbers of wildebeest and zebra (and Thomson's gazelle) congregate at the river's edge. Sometimes they cross but often inexplicably, they drift away. Whilst many cross one way some are going the other way. The river is full of wildebeest carcasses; most it seems, have drowned but some will have been caught by the crocodiles. Vultures and Marabou storks feed on the carrion and those of us watching can take in the whole scene; the animals jostling and waiting to cross, the bodies in the river, the vultures feeding on the bodies and watching the new arrivals whilst lying on the river's edge are the Nile crocodile waiting... Details of the whole trip are with the lion image.
