Red Kite at Gigrin Farm, Powys

Sarah and I headed for the wilds of Powys today, Started off with a walk round Gilfach reserve. Very windy and the river was in full flow. Plenty of Jay around but not much else today. We then headed for Gigrin to see kites having booked a hide in advance. Well prepared with petrol driven hand-warmers at full blast. Got the gear set up and waited for the main event (always plenty going on though in the hour before feeding starts). Rain came and went. Light came and went (several times). Excellent show both in terms of numbers and action as the feeding started. In addition to the kites we had buzzards and crows and also two heron sneaking in for a bite now and again. As is usual I was snapping away as Sarah quietly froze in the corner. Got some decent shots - this is a quirky shot of a buzzard being "buzzed" by a kite coming in for some of the meat.

Got back to the car and then discivered that one of the hand-warmers had stopped working - fortunately it was mine; if it had been Sarah's I think that I might have been the next bit of chopped meat for the raptors! Saved the day with a huge shot of gin, phew...
